Western Norwegian Cremation Practices:

#66

Innlegg av Kyrre »

This chapter concerns western Norwegian cremation practices in the Viking Age, specifically between the ninth and tenth centuries. It begins with a discussion on the problems and paradigms of Norwegian Viking Age funerary archaeology and highlights the difficulties in dealing with cremation burials, such as the often-rudimentary quality of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century documentation as well as the poor preservation of osteological remains. The debate then moves on to consider selected case studies from the cemetery of Myklebostad, and explores the possibility that Viking Age cremation rituals involved the ‛ceremonial fusion’ of four elements (something that is referred to as ‛elemental archaeology’): earth, wind, fire, and water. Potential new research avenues are also outlined here, and it is argued that a re-evaluation and re-publication of nineteenth- and twentieth century archaeological material assembled in 1912 by Norwegian scholar Haakon Schetelig could bring fruitful results and substantially enhance our understanding of Viking Age cremation practices
